But back to my question... who thinks about not wanting to be American poor?
And that was the case for many of us, having to sacrifice a date night because you didn't want to say "I can't pay for my ticket", or working relentlessly because all your family is surviving off of is the check that you're making. It's rough.
But that's why today's motivation Monday is about breaking the poverty cycle! Just because you grew up in poverty, doesn't mean you'll live in poverty. Sure the odds are against us. According to the Pew Research Center, 31.1% of Blacks, and 25.6% of Hispanics make up the poor Americans in our Nations last census. But remember that the odds are forever in your favor!
My advice? Think long term. No you don't have money right now, and the quick fix for that may be to get a part time job to keep money in your pocket, but in the long run, what are you aiming for? Pursue only what makes you instantly smile when you think about it. Work continuously for it, talk to professionals, take advice, and do the grunt work. You have to work to gain.
What keeps the poverty cycle going is need. Bad enough minimum wage is but so much, with expenses such as phone, internet (cause honestly, who's watching cable anymore?) and rent, how can one afford to maintain their way of living while still having some funds for leisure?
But what would break the poverty cycle? Desire. The desire to posses much more than just pocket money. Desires to be a homeowner, a car owner, to take vacations, to build a college fund for your kids. Once that desire is strong, then you have to have a plan. What are your goals, short-term, long-term? What's holding you back and how can you overcome those obstacles?
Outline your support system, and get ready for an action plan. You're going to face a lot of obstacles when trying to break the poverty cycle, but knowing your next step and have someone to tell you "nah, keep going, you got this" is ALWAYS a great reassurance.
Remember, you are capable. Sky's the limits. Don't let your past or current circumstances leave you feeling stuck or uncertain! Move forward confidently in the direction of your passion, trust the process, and watch how lovely everything falls into place for you.
